The Courts and Free Speech
In Just a Thought, February 8th, 2010
Should politicians be able to limit your freedom to criticize them during an election campaign?
Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that Congress could not criminalize the free speech of citizens during political campaigns. By striking down provisions of the McCain-Feingold bill that held that private citizens could not air any advertisements critical of sitting politicians during the final days of a political campaign, the court upheld the principle of free speech contained in the first amendment.
It must be a good decision because the liberals went crazy.
Their concern, after peeling away the hysteria, is that most of their positions cannot stand public scrutiny. A fully informed electorate almost universally rejects the socialist agenda of the left.
Without the freedom to expose the left’s agenda, the public is left without a counter to the biases of the main stream media.
So, regardless of that high pitched whine you hear from the left, be thankful the court still “gets it”.
