A Matter Of Faith
In Just a Thought, March 20th, 2009
How do you reconcile directly contradictory statements?
It seems to me that if someone utters directly contradictory ideas, either one most be false or else the speaker is intentionally being deceptive.
Consider the following statements (I paraphrase):
- I believe faith based organizations bring significant help to correct social pathologies.
- I do NOT believe people should be encouraged to give financial support to faith based organizations.
- I believe faith based organizations should deny their faith in order to receive public funding.
It is obvious that these positions are contradictory on their face…but they form a good summary of President Obama’s position or positions on the subject.
While he has said he welcomes faith based organizations to the table, they must not insist their faith distinctives be part of the solutions they offer…and, by the way, contributions to support these organizations will no longer be tax deductible.
Double speak is alive and well.
