Let’s Hear It for Big Government I
In Just a Thought, August 24th, 2009
I want to take a look at a few of the bigger government programs this week and give them each a grade.
First on my list is the Post Office…at first glance, you might think they do their job very well…most of us get most of our mail in a timely fashion, most of the time…and they do handle an enormous volume…unfortunately, most of it junk mail.
Upon closer examination, the Post Office lost $7 billion dollars in each of its last two years…and that’s after significant postage rate increases. As a result they are closing over 1000 offices across the country and discussing eliminating Saturday delivery. In the same environment, both UPS and FEDEX seem to be able to turn a profit.
The letter carriers are great people, but the bureaucracy and the unions make the Post Office non-competitive, thus earning a grade of C-.
