Let’s Hear It for Big Government II
In Just a Thought, August 25th, 2009
Today, let’s look at one of my favorite big government programs, public education. I come from a family of teachers…teachers are special…but public education is something else.
Rating the various K-12 education delivery systems available today, both home schooling and private schooling far out pace the public schools in meeting quantifiable educational goals…even though public schools in America receive more than $10,000 per child in public money. No home schooled child costs that much and only the most elite private schools receive more per pupil.
Public schools do have higher scores than the other delivery systems…in illiteracy, sexually transmitted diseases, unwed pregnancies, violence and drop out rates.
The teachers’ unions care more about job security for members than education for children…and their firm resistance to merit pay is disgraceful and their rabid desire to shut parents out of their children’s education is criminal.
Government bureaucracy, the NEA and the AFT earn the public school system a grade of F.
